Masala chai or chai masala is one of the most favorite Indian Beverages enjoyed especially during cold Winters and Monsoon Season. Masala tea is made in milk tea with a special chai masala powder.
Masala chai keeps our body warm and improves one’s immunity and cures cold and cough. And for this reason large population drink masala tea around the year as a morning tea, evening snacks or to serve to your tea loving guests.
To make chai masala powder one can use variety of spices and herbs like cardamoms, cloves, pepper corns, cinnamon, black cardamom, nutmeg, mace, star anise and ginger powder.
All the above mentioned spice and herbs can be used in different ratios to make different flavours of masala chai. And thus Chai masala or masala chai can be and is made in many different flavours all to suit one’s liking.
Today I am going to share a very balanced chai masala powder recipe which makes masala chai that you get in most of the standard tea stalls and Indian restaurants. If you are a tea lover and enjoy masala chai regularly, then you can make this homemade tea masala powder and stock it and use it when needed. Avoid making large batches of this chai masala as it will loose its aroma and flavours with time.

Ingredients for making masala chai powder:
- Green cardamom (elaichi) 20
- Cloves (lavang) 1 small tsp
- Pepper corns (kali mirch) 1 small tsp
- Cinnamon (dalchini) 1 inch piece
- Fennel seeds (saunf) ¼ tsp
- Ginger powder (saunth) 1 tsp
Making masala chai powder or chai masala:
- Add all the spices into a clean and dry blending jar and grind into a fine powder.
- Store the prepared tea masala in an air tight jar.
- ½ tsp of this masala mix is enough for making 2 large cups of masala tea.
Ingredients for making 2 mugs of masala tea:
- Milk 1 ½ cup
- Water ½ cup
- Tea leaves 5 tsp (or as needed to suit your taste)
- Sugar 2 tsp or as needed
- Chai masala powder (made above) ½ tsp
- Ginger freshly crushed or grated ½ inch piece
How to make masala chai:
- Add milk and water in a sauce pan and bring to a boil.
- Add tea leaves, sugar, freshly crushed ginger. Mix and let come to another boil (as we have added ginger to it).
- Now add homemade chai masala powder and mix. Note: You can increase or decrease the quantity of chai masala based on your taste.
- Simmer and cook tea for 2 to 3 minutes or until you get desired darkness.
- Filter and serve the hot, aromatic and flavourful masala chai with breakfast, snacks or as morning tea or evening tea.
